When I left my previous career in non-profit, I was burnt out, jaded by endless red tape, and convinced there had to be more to life than 90+ hour workweeks.

When I landed in the wedding industry, I promised myself I wouldn’t allow a repeat of that experience.

My first year in business, I listened to an event planner share a story about an employee holiday party they had produced for a corporate client.

At the end of cocktails, each employee received one of two envelopes. One held a ticket with admission to the dinner portion of the festivities. The other held a layoff notice.

The planner was proud of this party because the client was happy. A happy client meant a successful business.

Under my breath I muttered, “If that’s success, I don’t want it.”
